Dear Prime Minister,
Congratulations on your election victory, but now it’s time for action. With a billion people going hungry, we need you to do three key things to help eradicate poverty.
· It’s time to deliver our promises on aid: spend at least 0.7% of national income on effective aid by 2013.
· Make sure that trade deals, whether through the EU or World Trade Organisation, don’t deepen poverty. Trade should allow people to work their way out of poverty, not force through excessive deregulation and liberalisation measures that are harmful to poor people.
· Deliver on climate change. Cut our emissions by at least 40% by 2020 and provide additional funding to help people in developing countries adapt to the effects of climate change.
With only five years left to reach the Millennium Development Goals, make sure eradicating poverty doesn’t slip off your agenda.
Thank you.
